Italy coronavirus death toll jumps by 1,910 highest number since pandemic began

Public Health England has announced the latest deaths, which are way up on last Tuesday when the country recorded 1,243 Covid fatalities.

Reacting to the figures shadow Health Secretary Jonathan Ashworth tweeted: "Awful. Horrific. Devastating. And it didn't have to be like this."

However, cases have fallen for a fourth consecutive day and are at their lowest point since December 27, when 30,501 infections were announced.

A further 33,355 new cases were recorded today, bringing the total number of positive tests to 3,466,849.

More than 4.2 million people have now received their first dose of the vaccine in the UK - an increase of over 200,000 from yesterday.

There are now signs that the vaccination programme has already started to drive down Covid infection rates in Northern Ireland, the country's chief medical officer said.

Nursing homes and the over 80s population have seen pressures easing, Dr Michael McBride added.

Fresh supplies of the Oxford AstraZeneca inoculation have arrived and will be sufficient for the octogenarian and older population, health minister Robin Swann said.

Dr McBride said: "Some pressures on care homes are easing.

"That may be an early sign that the vaccine is beginning to have an impact."

Inoculations of those aged over 75 are due to begin shortly, Patricia Donnelly, who heads the vaccination programme, said.

Almost 35,000 of those aged over 80 have been dosed.

It comes after it emerged one in eight people throughout England would have tested positive for Covid antibodies in December, according to new data.

The Office for National Statistics said an estimated 12.1% of people aged 16 years and over in England had antibodies last month.

The figure was 8.9% in Scotland, 9.8% in Wales and 7.8% in Northern Ireland.

A total of 6,057 deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending January 8 mentioned Covid-19 on the death certificate, data reveals.

This is up from 3,144 deaths in the week to January 1 and is the highest weekly figure since the week ending April 24.

The ONS said the number of registrations will have been affected by the Boxing Day and New Year's Day bank holidays.

More than a third (34.1%) of all deaths registered in England and Wales in the week to January 8 mentioned Covid-19 on the death certificate.

It comes after the grim revelation that the UK has the highest coronavirus death rate in the world, new data shows.
