Single mum with no DIY experience transforms her family home for just £20k

Chloe Tolmie carried out the makeover while continuing to work, studying at university, and homeschooling her two children, and says she now feels "so proud of myself" after sharing the incredible results - which included fitting an entire kitchen by herself.

The 25-year-old, who is a support worker for vulnerable children, bought the three-bedroom home in Blackburn to live in with her children Oliver, five, and Olivia, four, in February 2020.

On top of her commitments to parenting, work, and training to be a nurse, she began renovating the property in July and has now finished all of the bedrooms, the living room, and the kitchen, with plans to move onto the dining room next.

Chloe says the renovation was a difficult process and the family were living off microwave meals until she was able to fit the kitchen, and the trio shared a bed until she got a grant for new mattresses from the council.

The huge project has cost just £4,000, including furniture, as Chloe tried to keep the costs down by buying many items second-hand and not needing to spend a penny on labour.

She said: "I got my sofas on finance, and I got a grant for new mattresses from the council.

I did everything on my own, with no help at all apart from the kids helping pick wallpaper stripping up.

"The house was £95,000 and I got it on a Rent-To-Buy scheme. It's three bedrooms and two bathrooms along with a separate toilet.

"I worked as many hours as I possibly could to afford to get everything done."

As well as juggling all of her other responsibilities, the superhero mum endured the added stress of a cancer scare during the renovation work.

Thankfully, the results came back clear and Chloe says she is proud to have balanced it all and revamped her home, with no DIY experience only adding to the challenge.

She said: "I feel so proud of myself to say I had never even put a piece of wallpaper up before moving into this property.
